When you have decided that you want to bring a new Basset Hound puppy into your home, your first instinct is to run out and buy the first puppy that you see. After all you are excited and do not want to have to wait a moment longer for your cute little puppy. Stop for a minute and slow down. The worse thing that you can do is pick a puppy without first shopping around.

The best place for you to get your Basset Hound puppy is through a reputable breeder. By reputable I mean one that you can trust. Look for a breeder that breeds the puppies for the love of the breed and not to just with the plan of making a fast buck. Call around to all of your local vets and ask them if there is a breeder that they could recommend. A vet is not going to send you to someone that is breeding these puppies in a bad environment.

Once you have a list of possible breeders take an afternoon and call them. Ask them about their puppies and the parents that they came from. Also you will want to take a second to ask about the puppy and their parents’ medical history, including vaccination records. Now ask them is they would have a problem with you coming to see the puppy. If they tell you that it is not possible take those off the potential list right away. Any breeder that will not let you see the environment the puppy comes from is hiding something. Visit with all the breeders that give you the ok before you make your final choice.
