Basset Hound Health

Compared to most breed the Basset Hound is incredibly healthy, this has a lot to do with the fact that there are not as many hereditary diseases that can be passed from parent to offspring. One of the main problems that the Basset Hounds face is that they are prone to ear problems. Problems occur due to the fact that their ears are so long and in some cases drag the ground, and since most owners do not clean the ears at least once a week, the unclean ears then become prone to infection.

Eye problems tend to be strong in this breed also. Glaucoma is a common issue that a lot of Basset Hound owners have to deal with. If you see any of the following symptoms take your dog to the vet immediately: eyes that look bulged out and painful, also your dog acts out in pain anytime you take them into the light. Basset Hounds also have a common problem with Ectropian and Entropain which is the turning out of the eyelashes and the turning in of the eyelids. Both of these conditions can cause serious damage to the eye due to the scratching from the lashes and the lids. Both conditions can be treated with surgery.

It is your job to take care of your Basset Hound. They cannot tell you when something is bothering them. You have to pay attention to your pet, and watch for symptoms or a change in behavior, if either of these occur call your vet immediately, it is better to be safe than sorry.
