Basset Hound Standards

Just like all other dogs that are considered a pure bred breed, the Basset Hound has been given a pre determined set of standards that are suppose to measure how perfect your dog is. A high standard Basset Hound will have short legs and big bones making them appear strong and not in the least bit clumsy. A high standard Basset Hound is ever mild in temperament; they are extremely devoted pets and should never appear mean or timid around strangers.

The Basset Hounds head should be large, with all the features balanced. The muzzle should look deep in set and the nose should be dark of color. The teeth should also be large and completely covered by the dark pigmented mouth. Eyes should be somewhat sunken and give off the sad appearance. A Basset Hound’s ears should be drawn forward yet low set and long and the neck that holds up the head should scream powerful when you look at it.

A high standard Basset Hound is about 14 inches tall, but can never reach over 15 inches if they do they are disqualified. also remember that you never want to have your Basset Hounds tail docked. A docked tail ruins any other high standards the dog may have. These are just a few examples of the list of standards that have been set for the Basset Hound breed. While these seem like strict guidelines, remember they are only important if you plan on making your dog a show dog.
