Crate Training Basset Hound
One of the first things that you should do before bringing your new Basset Hound puppy home is buy a crate. Before you write this off completely, hear me out. A crate is not a bad word; you are not taking your cute little puppy and shoving them in a cage. What you are doing is protecting your puppy when you cannot be around to watch them. Crate training not only keeps them safe from any trouble that they can get into, but it will also make house breaking them less of a task.
When you are deciding on a crate you will want to find one that has a barrier that can be adjusted. You do not want the crate to be too big or it will defeat the purpose. You want your Basset Hound to have just enough room to be able to stand up and turn around in it. This is not cruel. This is how the puppy learns to wait until he is taken to his designated spot to use the bathroom. By nature a dog will not go to the bathroom in the same place that he has to sleep. The most important rule that you have to follow when you are crate training your puppy is to never let them out of the crate when they are whining. You will be giving them a reward for their bad behavior. Remember that crate training is the best option for the both of you. In time your Basset Hound will view their crate as somewhat of a security blanket.
