Repetition Is The Secret To Leash Train Your Pup

Training a dog should start early. Puppies are easier to train than older dogs. Start training by teaching the puppy how to walk on a leash.

To begin, your dog should learn to wear the right sized collar. This means it should not be too large or small and should fit his or her neck.

Collars should be loose enough to fit a thumb between the collar and skin of your dog. Early on your puppy may find the collar annoying and try to take it off.

Patiently wait for your puppy to get acclimated to wearing the collar. After a few day and constant failures to remove it, the puppy will give up and grow accustomed to wearing it.

Next, choose a strong leash to attach to the collar so you can safely walk your puppy. A leash is a long rope attached to the collar that allows you to control your puppy.

Now begin training your puppy to walk on the leash. When you first take the puppy outside, it will try to run away.

Make sure your dog know it can go only so far on the leash. This distance should be enough that your puppy feels free to walk.

Ignore poor behavior from your puppy and don’t allow it to pull you. When they pull, stop walking until the behavior ceases.

If you stop walking due to pulling, make your puppy come before you commence walking again. If the puppy once again pulls, stop and bring them near you again.

By stopping, you will frustrate the puppy and it will stop pulling. Eventually, the puppy will learn it cannot go far on the leash.

Repetition will help the puppy learn this. Practice with your puppy on a leash at least five minutes at a time.

Adult dogs are trained with the same method as puppies. However, they can be more difficult to train and so it is best to start practicing with your dog as soon as your bring it home.
